Born in Big Spring, Texas, Michael Salgado learned about conjunto from his father, Ernie's group, Conjunto Alegria. In 1986, when the family moved to Rankin, Texas, the group became known as Los Salgados Del Norte, which included Michael (vocals/accordion), brother Ernie, Jr. (bajo sexto), uncle James Salgado (drums) and cousin Joe Tanguma (bass). The group recorded four CDs in the early 1990's, and began flourishing when Michael took the lead in 1994 and recorded the norteno classic, "Cruz de Madera." The single shot to No. 1 at Tejano and regional Mexican stations all over the Southwest. Since the 1990’s, Salgado has released a string of hit albums.
