With the notable exception of the late, great Doug Sahm, no other artist has embodied the full spectrum of Texas music as confidently - and with as much fervor and romance - as Joe Ely. From blueprints left by fellow Lubbock native Buddy Holly, Ely has mastered every style from rockabilly and honky-tonk to Tex-Mex, folk and sweaty roadhouse rock and blues. He's toured or shared stages with the Clash, Bruce Springsteen and Guy Clark, and won a Grammy with the Tex-Mex supergroup Los Super Seven. Of course Ely is also a key member (along with Jimmie Dale Gilmore and Butch Hancock) of the legendary Lubbock triumvirate, the Flatlanders. "Streets of Sin," the stately title track from Ely's most recent (2003) solo album, showcases his more introspective side.
