The Mississippi-born Herring was only a Texan for a brief period. From 2000 to 2003, she called Austin home and in that short period, her lissome delivery and sweetly-tinged acoustic music made a vivid impression: She was voted Best New Artist by both the daily Austin American-Statesman and the readers of the Austin Chronicle two successive years. Then, alas, she moved on to other pastures, but not before penning this skeptical reaction to a foreign culture and its customs: "You're what I call reasonably attractive," she tells a prospective dance partner, before adding, "With an ego that's hyperactive." Then there's the bit about the dancing they do down here…backwards, okay, but…in circles? And that little shuffle step that's built in? Well…Herring's wry skepticism melts before the deceptively simple appeal of a beer joint two-step. It's only a dance, after all…isn't it?
