Barbara Lynn's been called "The Empress of Gulf Coast Soul," and for good reason. The Beaumont native was only 20 when she hit the top of the R&B charts in 1962 with her debut single, "You'll Lose a Good Thing." While still in high school she was performing in sock hops and school talent shows by day and at night wowing hard-core blues crowds on the club scene with her guitar skills. She became a staple on the R&B circuit throughout the '60s and '70s with her song "Oh Baby (We've Got a Good Thing Goin')". "You're the Man," from Lynn's 2000 comeback album Hot Night Tonight, offers a compelling update of her classic sound courtesy of a guest appearance by her son, rapper Bachelor Wise.
